Ensemble Mode Guide

Draft your dream squad before the run starts and skip the alt-F4 reroll grind.

Last updated:

Ensemble Mode is How Many Dudes?’s curated team-building mode. Instead of accepting whatever Dudes appear on your first recruitment flyers, you pre-select which Dude Types join your roster before the run begins. It works similarly to Daily Dude’s fixed flyer setup, but you control the composition yourself.

This guide covers how to unlock Ensemble slots, when to use the mode, and how to theorycraft compositions that carry into Main Run strategy.

What Is Ensemble Mode?

In a standard Main Run, your early Dude pool is random. Ensemble Mode flips that: you choose up to five Dude Types (matching the full game’s squad size) before entering the Dude Ranch loop. Any slots you leave empty still fill randomly during the run, exactly like Classic Mode.

Butterscotch Shenanigans confirmed for the July 30, 2026 launch that Ensemble unlocks through metaprogression — as you earn Silver and Gold Stars across Challenge Tiers, you gradually unlock all five pre-select slots.

Why Play Ensemble Mode?

Test a specific synergy without RNG. Want to prove that 2 Zombie Dudes + Necromancer + Cleric scales past wave 80? Ensemble Mode lets you start with that core every time.

Practice for records. Community players chasing high-wave records use Ensemble to eliminate early-game variance and focus on mid-run Relic decisions.

Learn unfamiliar families. If Undead Dudes never appear in your Main Run drafts, Ensemble lets you force that family and learn its mechanics in a controlled environment.

Combine with Daily Dude logic. Both modes use Pre-Posted Flyer thinking — locking in families before the Relic Pool forms. Skills transfer directly between modes.

Unlocking Ensemble Slots

At full release, Ensemble slots unlock through metaprogression rewards tied to Challenge Tier progress:

  1. Tier 1 completion — unlock early slots and basic metaprogression (starting cash, consumables, Pocket Dice access)
  2. Silver and Gold Stars — earned per Dude by defeating Act Bosses; persistent across runs
  3. Gradual slot unlocks — each milestone opens another pre-select slot until all five are available

In the demo, Ensemble access may be limited compared to the 1.0 launch. Check the mode select screen after major patches — Butterscotch adds unlocks through the Collections and metaprogression systems.

Building an Ensemble Draft

Step 1: Pick Your Core Synergy (2–3 slots)

Choose the family or cross-family pairing your run depends on:

  • Undead core: Zombie Dude + Necromancer Dude (+ optional second Zombie)
  • Fantasy sustain: Wizard Dude + Cleric Dude
  • Economy opener: Workin’ Dude + Finance Dude

Step 2: Add Frontline (1–2 slots)

Almost every composition needs Warriors or tanks:

  • Knight Dude for taunt and temporary HP
  • Samurai Dude for single-target burst

Step 3: Leave Flex Slots Open (optional)

You do not need to fill all five slots. Empty slots receive random flyers mid-run, which can add unexpected Relic synergies. Many strong Ensemble runs use 3 fixed Dudes + 2 random slots for flexibility.

Step 4: Plan Relic Pool Bias

Your pre-selected families narrow which Relics appear in the pool. Before starting:

  • Note which family-specific Relics you want (e.g., Bloody Talisman for Cleric healing loops)
  • Avoid mixing too many families in Ensemble if you want a focused Relic pool

Step 5: Skew the Pool with Partial Pre-Posts

Official Butterscotch tip: you do not need five Pre-Posted Flyers. If your build requires Blood Bag for Vampire Dudes, pre-post only the Vampire Flyer (plus maybe one more). The early Relic pool stays tiny, dramatically improving odds for that key Relic. Pre-posting all five opens the full pool immediately — fine for variety, terrible for hunting one Relic.

Advanced Ensemble Strategies

The 3+2 split. Lock three synergy Dudes and leave two slots random. You get a reliable core plus surprise options when strong flyers appear mid-run.

The economy start. Pre-select Workin’ Dude + Finance Dude, leave combat slots random. Early Gold snowballs into Relic purchases even if your damage Dudes arrive late.

The boss prep lineup. Before a known tough Act Boss, use Ensemble to test whether your current Relic set can survive the encounter — similar to Rematch Mode but across a full run context.

Pocket Dice synergy. Metaprogression Pocket Dice reroll early shop and flyer options. Ensemble fixes your squad; Pocket Dice fix your early Relic and upgrade RNG.

Common Mistakes

  • Filling all five slots with different families — spreads synergies thin, same mistake as Main Run
  • Ignoring empty-slot value — random slots can offer strong unexpected Dudes
  • Forgetting positioning — Ensemble does not auto-position; place tanks front, glass cannons back
  • Skipping Relic planning — your family choices still define the pool; pick families that share Relic synergies
FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about How Many Dudes.

Do I need to fill all five Ensemble slots?

No. Any empty slot fills with random Dudes during the run, just like Classic Mode. Many players use three fixed Dudes and two random slots for flexibility.

Does Ensemble progress carry over to Main Run?

Yes. Star ratings, Gold, Silver, Relics, and metaprogression unlocks persist across all modes. Ensemble is a different starting condition, not a separate save file.

When do all five slots unlock?

At full release, slots unlock gradually through metaprogression tied to Challenge Tier progress and Star ratings. Exact milestones may change — check patch notes after July 30, 2026.

Can I use Ensemble Mode in the demo?

Ensemble availability in the demo may be limited compared to the full game. The April 2026 launch announcement confirmed full Ensemble support with five slots at 1.0 release.
